Bulldog starter Jamie Southern pitched a gem in game one versus Southern
Utah Tuesday night, striking out 12, including 8 in a row, and facing
one batter over the minimum. That one came with two out in the top
of the seventh
inning,
when Thunderbird
Lacee LePrey reached base on a ball hit to the far right of shortstop
Christina Clark.
Southern's quest for perfection was the only suspense in Game One,
as the Bulldog offense scored five runs in the first two innings. The
Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning. Angelina Diaz and Nicole
Shan, batting 1-2 in the lineup, singled to start the Bulldog half
of the first. Two outs later, they both scored when T'bird shortstop
Precious Gallo misplayed a ground ball by Bulldog catcher Pam West.
Fresno State increased its lead to 5-0 in the second on four singles
and a sacrifice fly. Southern
Utah starting pitcher Tracy Evans-Jones retired seven in a row after
that, but didn't get thru the fifth. Fresno State shortstop Christina
Clark led off the inning with a triple, and Lori Hoffman drove her
in with a single to left. That was all for Evans-Jones. Mandy Brown
came in in relief and walked three, forcing in a run, before retiring
the side.
Game Two started Southern Utah's way with three runs in the top of
the first. Fresno State starter Laura Ferreira didn't finish the first
inning. She struck out two but yielded four hits. Leslie Poole came
on in relief. One of the runners she inherited from Ferreira
scored to give the T'birds a 3-0 early lead.
Fresno State took advantage of wildness by Southern Utah starter
Lacee LePrey in the second, scoring a run on no hits. The first two
batters reaching on a walk and a hit batter. The Bulldogs
then manufactured a run
with a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly. Fresno State took control
of the game in the third, scoring five runs on a walk and five hits,
the runs scoring on Lori Hoffman's 2-RBI
double, Jamie Southern's double for one RBI, and Mitzi Ing tripling
two in with two out. Both Hoffman's and Southern's doubles hit the
outfield fence on the fly.
Bulldog reliever Poole gave up only two hits in her last five innings
of work. She earned her first win of the season.
