FRESNO, CA.- Fresno State softball's sophomore All-America
right-handed pitcher Jamie Southern (Clovis, Calif.) picked up
her first Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors
on the year late Monday evening and now has eight career WAC
Pitcher of the Week accolades.
For the second straight week Fresno State had the league's
pitcher of the week as freshman right-hander Laura Ferreira (El
Sobrante, Calif.) was honored on March 3.
Last week, Southern went 2-1 with victories over BYU and Cal
Poly and a loss to No. 1 UCLA. Amassing 512 career strikeouts,
she surpassed Bulldog All-America standout Melanie Parrent to
move into seventh place all-time at Fresno State. Southern became
the quickest Bulldog hurler to tally 500-career strikeouts as
it took just 64 appearances.
Against BYU, she tossed a four-hitter, walked one and struck
out 11 for her sixth 10-strikeout game of the season.
Against Cal Poly, Southern recorded a win in relief as she
allowed one hit and one walk while striking out seven in 5.1
innings to improve to 4-5 on the year. In addition, the seven
strikeouts recorded made Southern just the eighth Bulldog pitcher
and the sixth WAC pitcher to collect 500-career strikeouts.
Against No. 1 UCLA, Southern pitched four innings and gave
up four runs (one earned) on four hits, walked one and struck
out eight. The earned run given up to UCLA in the first inning
spanned 31.2 innings of play since she last allowed an earned
run on Feb. 14 to Central Florida.
With 94 strikeouts in 66.1 innings of work and six ten-strikeout
games on the season, Southern is averaging 9.95 strikeouts on
the year. In her last 35.1 innings of work, Southern has yielded
just two earned runs, seven walks and has struck out 56 (11.17
strikeouts/7 IP) for a 0.40 ERA.
In 430.0 career innings pitched, she is averaging 8.33 strikeouts
per seven innings and has given up 28 career earned runs for
a 0.46 career ERA and is 39-16 in her Bulldog career.
