Fresno State Defeats #3 Nebraska at Kia, 7-3
Laura Ferreira gets win in Bulldogs' first victory over a ranked team this season.

Fresno State got another shot at Nebraska and Peaches James in Fullerton Friday, and came out on top.

Each team scored once in the first inning. Fresno State, designated as the visitors, by a single by freshman shortstop Christina Clark to lead off the inning. Clark remained at second at the next two Bulldog batters flew out. Jamie Southern, the leftfielder this game, singled to plate Clark. Nebraska's shortstop, Amanda Buchholz, tied things with a home run in the bottom the inning off Fresno State starting pitcher Leslie Poole.

There was plenty of traffic on the bases for both teams in the third and fourth innings.
In the Fresno State half of the third, the Bulldogs had a single by Angelina Diaz and a walk to Lori Hoffman after two were out. Jamie Southern then put the Bulldogs ahead 4-1 with a home run to left field off Nebraska's Peaches James.
Nebarska got two of the runs back in the bottom of the third. After the first two batters were retired, Lisa Wangler hit a ground-rule double. Buchholz was hit by a pitch. 'Husker firstbaseman Nicole Trimboli singled to center, scoring Wangler. Buchholz came around to score on the play as well, on an error by Fresno State centerfielder Mitzi Ing.
Fresno State put another 3 on the board in the top of the fourth. Bulldog 1B Shasta Lewis walked to open the frame, catcher Pam West sacrificed her to second, Mitzi Ing was hit by a pitch. Leticia Pacheco reached on an error by the shortstop, with Lewis scoring on the play. That was all for Peaches James. Summer Tobias came in to pitch for Nebraska with one out. Tobias got the next out on a forceout at second on a ball hit by Christina Clark. The Bulldogs' next two batters, Diaz and Hoffman, hit RBI singles to make the lead 7-3.
Nebraska, in its half of the fourth, chased Bulldog starter Poole from the circle with three singles from the first three batters. Laura Ferreira came on in relief. The first batter she faced, pinch hitter Brittney Yolo hit into a home-to-first double play. After a walk re-loaded the bases, Ferreira retired the side without a run scoring, getting a flyout to left by Wangler.

Next:The Bulldogs conclude Kia Klassic pool play in Fullerton with a 1-2 record good enough for a second place in Pool B. (DePaul was 3-0, Nebraska, Fresno State, and Notre Dame were 1-2. Fresno State took second because of a run-differential tiebreaker.) The Bulldogs start bracket play against WAC rival Hawai'i at 7:00 tonight.

The next home date for Fresno State is next Tuesday, March 18 at 6pm facing Long Island University.
