FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State had two players named to the Louisville
Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association's (NFCA) Division I West
Region First Team in sophomore right-hander Jamie Southern (Clovis,
Calif.) and freshman shortstop Christina Clark (Santa Ana, Calif.).
A first team selection at utility, Southern picks up her second consecutive
first team all-West region accolade while Clark is honored for the first
time.
Named to the 12-member first team, both Southern and Clark will go
on for All-America consideration, which will be announced next Thursday,
May 22, in Oklahoma City.
Southern is 23-10 on the year with 15 shutouts, 291 strikeouts and
a 0.62 ERA in 224.0 innings. At the plate, she is batting .339 (56-165)
with 20 runs, seven doubles, triple, seven home runs, 13 walks and 30
RBI.
In the NCAA Regional opener this morning versus Long Beach State, Southern
pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out eight while hitting her seventh
home run of the season after going 1-3 with a run and two RBI.
Clark also hit a home run this morning and tied the school's single-season
mark with 15 after going 2-3 with two runs and a RBI. On the year, she
is hitting .398 (72-181) with 53 runs, 15 doubles, four triples, 15
home runs, 46 RBI, 14 walks and 140 total bases for a .773 slugging
percentage.
She leads Fresno State in 14 offensive categories: batting (.398), runs
(53), hits (72), doubles (15), triples (4), home runs (15), RBI (46),
total bases (140), slugging percentage (.773), walks (14), sacrifice
flies (2), stolen bases (5), multiple-hit games (20) and multiple RBI
(11).
