Fresno State played long-time nemesis UCLA at the Regionals Friday
morning, and only mustered two hits in a 3-0 loss. That sent the Bulldogs
to the losers bracket, where they met North Carolina for the second
time ever, and sent the Tar Heels home behind a 2-0 Jamie Southern shutout.
UCLA pitcher Keira Goerl kept Fresno State on the infield, only two
Bulldog-batted balls reached the outfield. Only one Bulldog reached
second base, Christina Clark on a walk and a stolen base in the fourth
inning. Goerl stuck out five and allowed two hits.
The Bruins scored single runs in second, third, and sixth innings.
Jamie Southern struck out eight and walked three.
That loss sent the Bulldogs to the losers bracket against North Carolina,
who had defeated Long Island University 10-2 earlier in the day.
Tar Heels starting pitcher Crystal Cox retired the first nine Bulldogs
she faced, before Fresno State broke through with a run in the top of
the fourth on three consecutive singles by Clark, Angelina Diaz, and
Lori Hoffman to start the inning.
Southern provided an insurance run in the top of the seventh with her
eighth home run of the year. In the pitching circle, she struck out
ten and walked two, throwing her 16th shutout of the season. Her first
strikeout of the game was her 300th of the season. She is the only Bulldog
hurler to record two 300+ K seasons.
Next: The Bulldogs face Georgia Saturday
at noon. If Fresno State wins, they play at 5:00 against whoever wins
the 2:30 Michigan State-UCLA game. To advance to Oklahoma City, Fresno
State must win two Saturday and two Sunday.
