Fresno State Softball Press Release
August 17, 2005

Former Bulldog Laura Berg Named New Fresno State Softball Assistant Coach

FRESNO, Calif.— Nothing like the feeling of returning home, Fresno State
softball head coach Margie Wright has announced that former Bulldog
All-American and three-time USA Softball Olympic gold medalist Laura
Berg is re-joining her staff.

With the departure of 12-year assistant coach Mary Ivy, Berg returns for
a second go-around after serving as an assistant coach to Wright from
2000-03. Berg had to step down from her full-time duties for the 2004
season in order to train full-time for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.

Having played a pivotal role in guiding Fresno State to its first NCAA
Division I team national title in 1998, Berg patrolled the outfield for
the Bulldogs and wrapped up her collegiate career by ranking among the
NCAA all-time greats in Division I softball. Still ranked second
all-time for career hits (396), she finished third all-time in at bats
(957), fifth in runs (245) and tied for 11th in triples (25).

Helping guide the USA Women's National Team to a pair of silver medals
last month at the World Cup of Softball and the Japan Cup, Berg has been
a world-class athlete since 1994 when she first joined the U.S. Women's
softball national system.

"I’m excited to be back," said Berg, who helped Fresno State to a 206-60
(.774) record in her four-year career in addition to a pair of Western
Athletic Conference titles and three NCAA Women's College World Series
appearances. "I’m thrilled to have another opportunity to work with
Coach Wright and use my experience to help the team fulfill their
potential. It’s always great to come back home and to be a part of a
community that truly supports Fresno State softball."

"It’s great to have Laura back," said Wright, the NCAA’s all-time
winningest softball coach. "It’s unfortunate that Mary was not able to
stay on but I can’t think of too many people who would fill in more
wonderfully than Laura. I didn’t want her to leave the first time
around. With a young team, her presence and experience will be a huge
asset. I’m very happy to be working with her again."

Honored with the 2003 Top Dog Alumni Award from the Fresno State Alumni
Association, Berg graduated from Fresno State in 1998 with a Bachelor of
Science degree in recreation and leisure studies.
