Jamie Southern card2003 (Sophomore): Went 25-12 on the year with 17 shutouts, 322 strikeouts (8.94 per 7/IP) & a 0.64 ERA in 36 starts with two relief appearances (win vs. Cal Poly & save vs. Nevada) … second Bulldog hurler to total at least 700 career strikeouts … sixth WAC & eighth Bulldog pitcher to tally 500 career strikeouts … quickest Bulldog pitcher to post 500 career strikeouts (64 games) … had season-best streaks of 28.2 scoreless innings pitched & 68.1 innings pitched without an earned run … allowed 19 earned runs, 37 walks and struck out 284 (8.95 K 7/IP) in last 222.0 innings for a 0.60 ERA … in last 24 starts went 20-4 with 15 shutouts while giving up 92 hits, 16 R (11 earned), walking 27 and striking out 204 (9.03 K per 7/IP) in 158.2 innings for a 0.49 ERA … first Bulldog to throw back-to-back 200 & 300 strikeout seasons … tossed14 ten-strikeout games … notched season-high 14 strikeouts versus Louisiana Tech … hurled six one-hitters & five two-hitters on year … at the plate, finished second on the team in walks (13), batting (.337), doubles (7), home runs (8) and TB (93) while third RBI (31) & hits (60) … totaled 16 multiple hit and eight multiple RBI games on year … collected18 two-out RBI games … had one multi-home run game (vs. #13 DePaul on 3/13/03) … hit safely in 16 of last 18 games & batted .390 (23-59, 8 R, 15 RBI, double, 4 HR, BB, SF, 36 TB for a .610 slugging pct.) … in last 27 games, she hit .375 (33-88) with 10 R, 4 BB, 4 doubles, 4 HR, 19 RBI & 49 TB for a .557 slugging pct. … made 36 starts in the circle, seven at first base, 10 in left field & five in right field …in the NCAA statistics, ranked all eight weeks in ERA and strikeouts per 7/IP while being ranked six weeks in victories … in the final release of the national statistics, finished No. 3 in ERA (0.64), No. 9 in strikeouts per 7/IP (8.9) and No. 20 in wins (25) … in career, has 33 10-strikeout games and has thrown 16 extra inning games … owns career-best 11.2 hitless innings, 52.1 scoreless innings, 92.2 innings without an earned run and a 7:1 strikeout to walk ratio … is 60- 22 with five saves and 40 shutouts … had pitched 75 complete games with 79 starts and 93 appearances … in 616.2 innings pitched, has given up 311 hits, 71 runs (45 earned), 109 walks and has struck out 740 (8.41 strikeouts/7 IP) for a 0.51 ERA .

2002 (Freshman): First conference player to garner WAC Freshman of the Year honors and WAC Pitcher of the Year accolades in the same season … NCAA ERA statistical champion with a 0.44 while finishing sixth in victories (33-10) … second freshman ever in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in ERA … threw the most innings by a hurler in NCAA Division I statistics with 351.2 (ranks No. 17 in NCAA Division I season statistics) … led the nation in ERA every week during the year … went 33-10 in 41 starts with 22 shutouts & 400 strikeouts in 351.2 IP for a 0.44 ERA … third freshman in NCAA Division I history to tally 400 or more strikeouts in a rookie year … in NCAA Division I single-season history, ranks No. 16 in strikeouts and No. 17 in innings pitched … had 19 ten-strikeout games & averaged 7.97 strikeouts a game … threw two perfect games: UC Riverside (March 3) & San Jose State (April 13) … had three no-hitters on the year (UCR, Tennessee Tech & San Jose State)… also tossed three one-hitters & five two-hitters … had a streak of three consecutive games with 10+ strikeouts & averaged 13.0 strikeouts a game in that span (39 in 21.0 IP) … set a then single-game school record 19 strikeouts vs. #10 Pacific before tallying 22 against Tulsa for a new school & WAC single-game mark … had 15 multiple-hit games & six multiple RBI … had a season-high seven-game hit streak & batted .435 (10-23, 3 R, 5 RBI, 3 doubles, BB, 12 TB, .522 slug pct.) … had 10 two-out RBI games … turned six of the team’s 19 double plays.

2001 (Medical Redshirt): Injured right shoulder in fourth game of the season versus CS Northridge … opened year with a win over Iowa State and picked up a win in relief against San Diego State … collected a save against #11 Michigan … opponents batted .116 against her in four appearances … posted nine strikeouts against Iowa State in collegiate opener… had a modest two-game hit streak and hit .500 (3-6, 3 RBI, double, walk, 4 TB).

Clovis HS: Two-sport varsity letterwinner in volleyball and softball at Clovis High School … in softball, played four positions (pitcher, first base, right field and center field) … as a senior, batted .393 with 12 doubles, seven triples, a home run, 21 RBI, 43 runs and 18 stolen bases … in the circle, she went 19-4 with a 0.27 ERA and 229 strikeouts in 204 innings … posted 16 shutouts, three no-hitters and one perfect game … helped CHS to a Tri- River Athletic Conference championship while guiding her team to district and sectional titles … NFCA/Louisville Slugger High School first team All- American and all-West Region first 2004 team at utility … 2000 Cal-Hi Sports state softball player of the year…Tri-River Athletic Conference player of the year … set a section record with 54 hits her final season … as a junior, captured all-conference player of the year accolades and was named to the all-state team … CHS went 32-6-1 and finished with a No. 14 national ranking… Cal-Hi Sports sophomore player of the year … first team all-West Region … all-conference and all-Valley … as a freshman, The Fresno Bee’s Valley Player of the Year … Cal-Hi Sports freshman player of the year … league player of the year … in prep career, posted a 72-17-1 record with a 0.32 ERA and batted .393 (202-514) … in volleyball, was a three-time all-conference pick and a two-time all-Valley selection.

Personal: Born December 18, 1981 ... parents are John and Candy Southern … has an older brother, Ben … hobbies include spending time with family and friends … admires her parents and Mr. Zimmerman the most … biggest athletic thrill was winning 16-under national title with the Fresno Force in 1997 …1999 and 1998 ASA All-American … recruited by Washington, Oregon State, Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA and LSU … participates in Big Hero-Little Hero program at Fresno State.

USA Softball
2003: Helped the USA Elite Team to a gold medal at the 10th Canada Cup in Surrey,B.C., Canada … went 3-0 with a no-decision in four starts … posted a 0.00 ERA with three shutout victories and a shared shutout win over Australia … in 25.0 innings of work, allowed 12 hits, walked 12 and struck out 23 in five appearances for a 0.00 ERA … only USA Elite pitcher to not allow a run … pitched 8.0 scoreless innings in the championship game against Australia and gave up four hits and struck out two for a no-decision … starting pitcher versus 1996 Olympic Silver Medalist China, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist United States and twotime Olympic Bronze Medalist Australia … defeated USA, 1-0, on a fourhitter … defeated China 7-0 (5 inn.), on a one-hitter … in first appearance at Canada Cup, pitched final 1.0 inning against Chinese Taipei and struck out all three batters looking in 8-1 (5 inn.) win … in the final USA Elite stats in which they went 16-1 on the summer, Southern went a team-best 5-0 with two shutouts, two combined shutouts, allowed 22 hits, four runs (one earned), walked 14 and struck out 37 for a team-best 0.17 ERA … 2002: Helped USA Elite Team to a silver medal at the Canada Cup … pitched a complete game in debut against Spain as she tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out five in 10-0 win … had a start against Teamsmith Nationals … at the Canada Cup, went 1-0 with a shutout while allowing six hits, one run (earned) with three walks and eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings for a 1.29 ERA.
